Piracy Hurts Creators: Why Paying for Content Matters
Imagine cooking jollof rice to sell and expecting to make ₦10,000 profit. Then thieves take portions of it and resell them cheaply. You are left with only ₦2,000 after doing all the work. That is similar to what happens when films, series and music are copied from their owners and shared through unauthorised platforms. The people who created the content lose income, even though they invested their time, skill and money. Choosing licensed platforms to watch films or listen to music helps creators earn from their work. If we would not want others to profit from our labour without permission, we should not do it to them. For Christians, this is also a reminder to treat others fairly and avoid benefiting from what was taken without consent.
