Lagos-Calabar Highway Detour Raises Questions Over Cost, Planning and Its Coastal Name
I am struggling to understand why the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is now expected to leave the coast after Ogun State, move through Edo State and link with the East-West Road. If this route change is necessary because of difficult terrain in Ondo State, Nigerians deserve a clear explanation of why those conditions were not resolved before the project was announced and funded. The minister describes the diversion as an excellent engineering decision, but it raises serious questions about the original design, surveys, environmental assessment, procurement process and the project’s final cost. A road presented as a coastal highway should not be substantially redirected inland without transparent information on what has changed and what taxpayers will now pay. I believe the government must publish the revised route, timeline, bill of quantities and the engineering reasons for the detour. Nigerians also need to know how the change will affect communities, road users and the original promise of a continuous Lagos-Calabar coastal corridor.
