UK Court Upholds £101.5m Confiscation Order Against James Ibori
The Court of Appeal in London has rejected former Delta State Governor James Ibori’s bid to reduce a £101.5 million confiscation order. He had challenged about £4.3 million of the amount. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, November 3, Reuters reported. Ibori said he was consulting his lawyers about his next steps and expressed frustration with the length of the proceedings, saying, “Give me a break.” The order was made in July 2023 after a UK court found that assets linked to Ibori were subject to confiscation. It requires him to pay immediately or face an eight-year prison term in default. The appeal had delayed enforcement, which can now proceed unless he takes the case to the UK Supreme Court. Ibori governed Delta State from 1999 to 2007. He pleaded guilty to money laundering in the UK in 2012 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was released in 2016 and returned to Nigeria the following year. In 2021, the UK returned £4.2 million recovered from his former wife and sister to Nigeria.
