RMD, Theatre Veterans Reunite in Lagos to Mark 40 Years of AJOFEST ’86
Veteran actors and theatre practitioners, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ayo Lijadu, Lara Akinsola and Yomi Layinka, will gather in Lagos to mark 40 years since AJOFEST ’86. The reunion will celebrate the legacy of playwright, lawyer and cultural advocate Dr Fred Agbeyegbe. The event will hold at 4pm on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at Queen Amina Gardens, National Theatre, Iganmu. It will feature a keynote address by Ben Tomoloju, panel discussions, tributes and dramatic readings from Agbeyegbe’s four AJOFEST plays: The King Must Dance Naked, Woe Unto Death, The Last Omen and Budiso. AJOFEST ’86 staged the four plays over consecutive weekends during Nigeria’s military era. Its productions explored tradition, justice, political power and authoritarianism, while creating opportunities for actors and technical professionals. Organisers are also seeking photographs, programmes, recordings and personal recollections that can help preserve the festival’s history. Admission is free, and the programme is being held in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners.
