US Arrests California Woman Accused of Spying on Taiwan President’s Son
US authorities have arrested Wanying Zhang, a 34-year-old California woman, over allegations that she acted on behalf of Chinese officials to monitor the son of Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te. The FBI said Zhang was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport shortly before a planned trip to China. She is charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Prosecutors allege that Zhang travelled to Seattle in 2025, where she gathered photographs, videos and vehicle licence plate details connected to Lai’s son and his family. Taiwan’s Presidential Office condemned the alleged surveillance as transnational repression.
