Families of 16 Abia Traders Killed in Crash Await Promised Government Support
Families of 16 Umuahia traders who died in a road crash on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway say they are still waiting for financial support promised by the Abia State Government. The traders were returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Enugu State on February 15, 2026. Widows and relatives say the deaths of many breadwinners have left them struggling to provide for their children and meet daily needs. Some families reportedly borrowed money for burial expenses. The Abia State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection confirmed that the assistance has not yet been paid. She said the ministry is still processing it and that beneficiaries will receive payments directly when the process is completed. She added that the government had earlier settled hospital bills linked to the accident.
