Inside John the Baptist’s Declaration: “I Am Not the Messiah” (John 1:19–28)
Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to question John the Baptist. He freely confessed he was not the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet. Instead, he identified himself as the voice crying out in the wilderness, quoting Isaiah to “make straight the way for the Lord.” When asked why he baptized if he was none of these, John explained he baptized with water. Yet among them stood the one they did not know—the one who would come after him and baptize with the Holy Spirit. He said he was not even worthy to untie the straps of that person’s sandals. This exchange took place at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
