Imo Sachet Water Producers Halt Production, Prices Jump 40%
Producers of sachet water in Imo State have suspended operations for three days. The shutdown began on Monday, March 16, causing shortages in Owerri and nearby areas. Consumers now pay around N500 per bag, up from N350. Street hawkers who sold three sachets for N100 are charging N100 for a single sachet. Some anonymous producers blamed rising costs of nylon packaging and diesel for generators. They also suggested the halt could be a tactic to introduce higher prices. Association chairman Bismark Lumanze said the break was routine maintenance. He cited machine cleaning, filter replacement, and equipment servicing. He assured residents production will resume on Thursday, March 19.
