Atiku Urges Tinubu to Adopt Local Refinery Subsidy to Cut Petrol Prices
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a targeted subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria, saying the government should prioritise relief for households over political credit. Atiku said high petrol prices are driving up transport fares, food costs and production expenses while weakening the purchasing power of Nigerians. He argued that palliatives cannot replace policies that address the causes of rising living costs. He proposed a transparent, limited subsidy for petrol refined locally and sold within Nigeria, excluding imported products. According to him, the programme should have spending limits, National Assembly approval and independent audits, while helping lower energy costs for families, manufacturers and small businesses.
