Anambra LG Poll: Unopposed Chairmanship Candidates Face Yes-or-No Vote
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission says unopposed chairmanship candidates in 20 local government areas must win more “Yes” than “No” votes to be declared elected in the August 29 council poll. Only APGA and YPP are participating in the chairmanship election. APGA has candidates in all 21 LGAs, while YPP is contesting only in Anambra East. A conventional ballot with party logos will be used in Anambra East, where two candidates are running. In the other 20 LGAs, voters will use a Yes-or-No ballot without party logos to either approve or reject the sole chairmanship candidate. ANSIEC says a candidate rejected by more No votes will not be declared winner, and parties will have to begin the nomination process again. The commission said it is over 90 per cent prepared for the election, which will hold across 21 LGAs and 326 wards. The Yes-or-No arrangement applies only to chairmanship contests, not councillorship elections.
