CAF Reconsiders Returning AFCON to a Two-Year Cycle
CAF president Patrice Motsepe says the body is considering restoring the Africa Cup of Nations to its traditional two-year schedule. No final decision or timetable has been announced. CAF had previously planned to move AFCON to a four-year cycle after the 2027 and 2028 editions, while introducing an annual African Nations League from 2029. The proposal faced criticism from those who feared it would reduce revenue, player exposure and regular opportunities for African national teams. AFCON remains a major source of income and visibility for African football. The next tournament is scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027, and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
