Golden Eaglets Miss 2027 U-17 World Cup: Seven Editions Nigeria Failed to Qualify For
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will miss the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup after failing to advance from Group B of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship. A defeat to Niger Republic and a draw with Côte d’Ivoire ended their route to the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The African tournament will determine the continent’s representatives at the World Cup in Qatar. Nigeria, a record five-time U-17 world champion, has now missed seven editions of the competition. The previous absences came in 1991, 1997, 2005, 2011, 2017, 2023 and 2025. They include failed qualification campaigns, a 1997 administrative disqualification and recent exits to regional rivals. The latest setback has renewed concerns over the decline of Nigeria’s once dominant youth-football programme.
