Lagos Govt Cites Lack of Evidence in Owode Onirin Killings, Rejects Shielding Claims
The Lagos State government has denied protecting police officers accused in the August 2025 Owode Onirin market killings. The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice said a review of witness statements, suspect accounts and documents failed to establish a prima facie case against the officers. Officials noted there was no eyewitness testimony linking the policemen to the shooting in a busy market. Evidence suggested the officers were attacked first, disarmed and that a trader allegedly used the rifle to fire shots. The Ministry of Justice requested post-mortem findings, ballistic analysis and forensic reports before advising on charges of conspiracy and involuntary manslaughter. Those documents arrived only after the decision and remain under review. The Attorney-General stressed this advice is not final. If credible new evidence emerges, prosecution will resume to ensure due process is upheld.
