Mother of Four Jailed for Life Over Attempted Murder of 12-Year-Old in Akwa Ibom
A High Court in Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom, has sentenced 36-year-old hairdresser and mother of four Uwakmfon Jonah to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl. The court heard that the defendant lured the girl from a market under the pretext of buying fresh pepper. She led the child into a nearby bush, tied her mouth with cloth and attacked her with a knife, inflicting deep cuts to her eye and neck before fleeing. The victim escaped, sought treatment, and immediately identified her assailant at the hospital. During trial, the defendant claimed she handed the girl over to another woman, but the judge found this story unsubstantiated. Citing the severity of the wounds and the defendant’s own admissions, Justice Winifred Effiong held that the prosecution proved intent to kill beyond reasonable doubt. Under Section 276 of the Criminal Code, a life term is mandatory and cannot be reduced.
