FIFA’s Visit Is a Chance to Reset Nigerian Football Governance

I welcome the FIFA delegation to Nigeria and hope their visit helps resolve the country’s long-running football governance crisis. FIFA has often been invited into domestic disputes, creating fear and confusion over whether it is intervening or interfering. FIFA’s statutes require member associations to operate independently and without third-party interference. The world football body does not prescribe a fixed electoral structure for member associations, beyond broad democratic principles. Nigeria must therefore take responsibility for designing a transparent and credible system that accommodates key stakeholders. This visit should not be used to validate another flawed process. FIFA should listen and assess, while Nigerian football stakeholders agree on practical reforms, make necessary compromises and restore confidence in the administration of the game. FIFA is not an enemy of Nigerian football. The real solution lies in ending the struggle for power and putting governance structures in place that serve the sport, its players and supporters.
