FG Warns Drug Resistance May Be Making Common Infections Deadlier in Nigeria
The Federal Government has raised concern over antimicrobial resistance, saying it was linked to an estimated 64,500 deaths in Nigeria in 2019. At a joint ministerial briefing in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, warned that infections could become harder and more expensive to treat when antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines stop working. He said drug resistance could increase the risks associated with routine infections, surgery and childbirth. Agriculture officials also warned that excessive or inappropriate antimicrobial use could harm food safety, livestock productivity and disease control. The ministries involved said Nigeria’s One Health response will coordinate action across human health, animal health, agriculture and the environment.
