Rethinking Child Discipline: Why Fear Is Not the Same as Respect
Many African homes and schools still treat flogging, humiliation and intimidation as normal forms of discipline. But fear may produce silence and obedience without teaching children responsibility, confidence or sound judgement. Children should be corrected without being broken. Positive discipline should focus on clear boundaries, communication, accountability and guidance rather than physical punishment or shame. If we want a more creative and confident generation, parents, teachers and institutions must make room for questions, mistakes and critical thinking. The way children are raised today will shape the Nigeria and Africa they build tomorrow.
