Ex-London Imam Jailed for Life for Rape and Child Sexual Abuse
Abdul Halim Khan, 54, of Bethnal Green used his position as an imam to deceive and abuse women and girls between 2004 and 2015. He told victims he had supernatural powers before carrying out his attacks. In February, Khan was convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court of nine counts of rape, several counts of sexual assault and child rape. He received a life sentence and must serve at least 20 years behind bars. In sentencing, Judge Leslie Cuthbert said he had taken “monstrous advantage” of women who trusted him. She noted he believed his victims would be too ashamed to come forward. Victims described feeling terrified, powerless and trapped under threats of “black magic.” The Crown Prosecution Service praised their bravery and reminded anyone facing sexual violence that support is available.
