FG Sets Seven-Week Timeline for National Bill on State Police

FG Sets Seven-Week Timeline for National Bill on State Police

The Federal Government has begun developing the legal and operational framework for introducing state police in Nigeria. The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has been given seven weeks to produce a bill outlining how federal and state police services would operate. The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the bill is intended to provide the detailed rules for the proposed policing system. He noted that no state police service currently exists. Although the Senate approved the constitutional proposal on June 24, 2026, and the House of Representatives passed the Executive State Police Bill on July 23, 2026, the amendment must still be approved by the required number of state Houses of Assembly before it can take effect. Until that process is completed and an implementation law is passed, the Nigeria Police Force remains the country’s only legally recognised police organisation.
