Atiku’s 2027 Bid: Will He Face Another Crushing Defeat Over Zoning?

Atiku’s 2027 Bid: Will He Face Another Crushing Defeat Over Zoning?

Abubakar Atiku has once again challenged Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement. After his 2023 attempt fractured the PDP and led to his defeat, he appears set to repeat the same mistake. In a recent interview, he argued that southern presidents have served longer than northern ones and claimed he is not bound by the zoning formula. This overlooks the fact that President Jonathan succeeded the late Yar’Adua, creating an unplanned rotation shift. With Buhari and Tinubu completing two terms each, it is widely seen as the South’s turn in 2027. Given his track record, another Atiku campaign under these circumstances may end in yet another spectacular loss.

It's telling that his 2023 bid fractured the PDP; repeating the same argument on rotation seems tone deaf.

I get the argument about southern service time, but insisting on another run ignores voter fatigue with familiar faces.

Perhaps the PDP should clearly define zoning rules before primaries and focus on grassroots sentiments to avoid repeat fractures.
