UNIOSUN Honours Prof. Taiwo Adewole’s Legacy as Lecture Highlights Sickle Cell Research
Osun State University held its third biennial memorial lecture for the late Prof. Taiwo Adegboyega Adewole, pioneer Provost of its College of Health Sciences. The event celebrated his contributions to medical education, HIV treatment research and community development. Guest lecturer Prof. Rahman Bolarinwa examined the role of immunobiology and molecular genetics in tackling sickle cell disease. He noted that Nigeria has an estimated 4–6 million people living with the condition, while 20–25% of the population carries the trait. The lecture also recalled Prof. Adewole’s role in early Nigerian research on prenatal diagnosis for sickle cell disease. UNIOSUN said it plans to strengthen sickle cell research and medical training in honour of his legacy. The Vice-Chancellor also reflected on the revival of the university’s medical programme and the induction of 90 UNIOSUN-trained doctors in August 2026.
