FG Releases ₦40.7bn for Primary Healthcare, Extends Insurance to 90,000 Inmates
The Federal Government has approved ₦40.7 billion from the Basic Health Care Provision Fund for third-quarter healthcare delivery across the 36 states and the FCT. The funding will support primary healthcare services, while more than 5,000 additional facilities are expected to join the existing network of over 8,000 facilities. The government said the expansion will prioritise communities based on population, disease burden and distance from health centres. The government also approved health-insurance coverage for about 90,000 inmates under the Vulnerable Group Health Insurance Fund. It said savings through the primary healthcare agency will help recruit frontline health workers, with states expected to take on more responsibility for staffing over the next three years. Officials urged states to increase health funding, especially for responses to cholera, Lassa fever and diphtheria, and called for public monitoring to ensure the funds reach health facilities.
