Osun Schools Accused of Collecting Up to ₦24,000 Despite ₦500 Approved Levy
An investigation has alleged that some public schools in Osun State collect between ₦12,000 and ₦24,000 per student per term, despite a government-approved ₦500 Education Trust Levy. Parents also reportedly provide compulsory items such as cleaning materials and stationery, while some are asked to buy books within school premises. The Osun Commissioner for Education said the approved levy remains ₦500, with an additional ₦2,000 maintenance charge in mega schools. He said other contributions are determined by individual PTAs based on each school's needs. The state PTA chairman, however, said its leadership was unaware of the alleged collections. Parents and education advocates have called for an inquiry into the charges and clearer enforcement of the state's free-education policy. They want action against any school found to be imposing unauthorised fees or compulsory purchases on families.
