Abia State Hospital Performs First Major Brain Surgery, Saves 19-Year-Old Patient
Doctors at the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia have performed the facility's first major brain surgery on a 19-year-old patient who arrived in a deep coma. The patient had severe bleeding inside his skull, with blood pressure on his brainstem creating an immediate risk to his life. Surgeons removed more than 100 millilitres of blood clot during the operation. The patient has since regained movement in his limbs and remains under observation in the Intensive Care Unit. Health officials say the successful procedure reflects the hospital's upgraded facilities and specialist surgical capacity.
