No Fixed Price for Kidney Donation, Surgeon Says as Trafficking Probe Raises Concerns
A consultant plastic surgeon, Dr. Torngee Malu, says Nigerian law does not set a fixed amount for kidney donation. He explained that donors may be reimbursed or compensated through legal channels, but human organs should not be treated as commodities with price tags. Speaking on a television programme, Malu said kidney failure affects both wealthy and low-income Nigerians. He urged greater access to safe and ethical transplant services rather than a focus on how much a kidney should cost. He also distinguished lawful transplantation from organ trafficking. According to him, kidney removal is a specialised procedure that must be performed by trained transplant experts in properly equipped medical facilities. The comments come amid renewed concern over alleged kidney harvesting and human trafficking. Federal health guidelines issued in 2025 are intended to strengthen ethical organ donation, protect donors and patients, and curb exploitation.
