Igbokoda Residents Seek Urgent Cleanup After NAF Crash Contaminates River
Residents of Igbokoda in Ondo State say unrecovered human remains and fuel traces are still being seen in a river near the site of the Nigerian Air Force crash on 5 October. They say a persistent stench has spread into nearby homes. The ATR-42 aircraft, travelling from Benin City to Lagos, crashed into a swamp near the Air Force forward operating base in Igbokoda, killing all 25 people on board. Residents want authorities to recover remaining debris and remains, contain the fuel spill, and provide safe water during the cleanup. Ondo State says it is working with federal authorities to assess contamination and plan decontamination. The Air Force has also set up investigation and recovery teams, while the National Assembly has called for an audit of NAF aircraft airworthiness and maintenance records.
