Kunle Afolayan Says Weak Naira Is Driving Nigerian Filmmakers to YouTube
Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan says the weak naira is a major reason many filmmakers are turning to YouTube. He argued that dollar-based earnings make the platform more attractive when converted to naira. According to him, a film that attracts one million views can earn about $10,000. At roughly ₦1,400 to the dollar, that income becomes far more valuable locally. He said many filmmakers would lose interest in YouTube if the exchange rate fell to around ₦200 per dollar. His comments have renewed debate about film distribution, cinema revenue and the growing use of social media promotions by Nollywood stars. Afolayan had previously criticised colleagues who dance online to market their films, drawing responses from Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo and Chinyere Wilfred.
