Defence Minister Musa Says He Lost 10 NDA Coursemates in Liberia War
Defence Minister Christopher Musa says he lost 10 Nigerian Defence Academy coursemates during the Liberian civil war, where Nigerian troops served under the ECOWAS Monitoring Group, ECOMOG. Speaking at the unveiling of a book on ECOWAS peacekeeping efforts in Abuja, Musa recalled how one young officer insisted on joining colleagues deployed to Liberia and was killed a year later. He said such sacrifices should remind Africans of the human cost of conflict. Musa said ECOMOG, rather than foreign powers, played the central role in restoring peace in Liberia and Sierra Leone. He urged West African leaders to strengthen regional cooperation, prevent conflicts early and preserve ECOWAS’ peacekeeping legacy.
