House of Reps to Uncover Human and Economic Toll of Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the deaths, injuries and property losses suffered by Nigerians in South Africa after repeated xenophobic attacks. Lawmakers plan to document homes, businesses and investments abandoned by those forced to flee. The resolution follows a motion moved by Babajimi Benson, who noted Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa’s liberation and the ongoing violence against legal Nigerian residents. Major outbreaks in 2008, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 led to emergency evacuations and strained bilateral ties. Recent anti-foreigner campaigns by groups such as Operation Dudula have intensified fear and displacement. The House has tasked its Committees on Diaspora Affairs, Foreign Affairs and African Integration to report within four weeks. They will recommend diplomatic, legal and policy measures to protect Nigerians abroad and hold perpetrators accountable.
