Sophie Okonedo and David Oyelowo Lead Lagos-Set Film ‘Clarissa’
Nigerian twin filmmakers Arie and Chuko Esiri return with Clarissa, a Lagos-set reimagining of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. The film follows Clarissa, played by Sophie Okonedo, as she prepares for an elite party while memories, old relationships and unresolved emotions resurface. Fortune Nwafor plays Septimus, a young soldier living with the trauma of his past. The story contrasts Lagos high society with the private struggles of people who are often unseen. The cast includes David Oyelowo, Ayo Edebiri, India Amarteifio, Toheeb Jimoh, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Jude Akuwudike, Danny Sapani, Modesinuola Ogundiwin, Chuks Joseph and Joke Silva. Clarissa premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, was acquired by NEON, and is scheduled for a limited cinema release on 11 December 2026.
