Morocco Renames Major Highway After Donald Trump Amid Western Sahara Dispute
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has confirmed that the former Tiznit-Dakhla highway has been renamed in honour of US President Donald Trump. The king described the move as a personal expression of regard for Trump. The 1,055km road passes into Western Sahara, a disputed territory largely controlled and claimed by Morocco. In 2020, the Trump administration recognised Morocco’s claim over the territory as part of a normalisation agreement between Morocco and Israel. Western Sahara remains one of Africa’s longest-running disputes. The Polisario Front seeks independence for the Sahrawi people, while the UN continues to call for a political solution and a referendum on the territory’s future.
