BSF Farming Is Not Free: Calculate the Real Cost Before You Start
Black soldier fly (BSF) farming can reduce feed costs, but it is not automatically a cheap business. The larvae may feed on organic waste, yet farmers still need to budget for eggs, containers, housing, water, electricity, transport, labour and waste preparation. Before starting, do not assume that waste means free production. Ask how much it will cost to source, move and process the waste in your own location. Also calculate your likely market, selling price and total production cost. BSF farming may be a viable opportunity when managed well, but the numbers must work. A business that costs ₦10,000 to produce and sells for ₦12,000 leaves only a small margin before other expenses are considered. Have you tried BSF farming?
