Nigeria Reaffirms OIC Commitment, Seeks Stronger Support for Lake Chad and Sahel

Nigeria has restated its commitment to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation as a platform for peace, development and cooperation among member states. At the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Jeddah, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, called for stronger attention to insecurity, humanitarian needs and development challenges in the Lake Chad Basin and the Sahel. He proposed a Nigeria-OIC Working Group on Humanitarian Affairs. Nigeria also renewed its support for Palestinian self-determination and called for civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian aid and a lasting end to hostilities in Gaza. The minister held talks with Saudi and Sierra Leonean officials on trade, investment, security, regional cooperation and the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims. He said Nigeria wants more measurable OIC-backed programmes in areas such as vocational training, healthcare, youth development, women empowerment and infrastructure.
