Donald Duke, Diri Clash Over Feasibility of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
Former Cross River State governor Donald Duke has disagreed with Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri over whether the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway can be built through Bayelsa’s swampy terrain. Diri had rejected Duke’s earlier concerns, citing roads and bridges built across swamps and mangroves in Bayelsa. He said modern construction methods had made such infrastructure possible. Duke maintained that the issue goes beyond local engineering capacity. He questioned whether Nigeria can afford the project, given its cost, the difficult terrain and the government’s reliance on borrowing. He also raised concerns about plans to connect parts of the route to the East-West Road.
