INEC Says Chairman Amupitan Is on Official Assignment Outside Abuja
INEC says its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, is away from Abuja on an official assignment and has the authority to delegate duties to any national commissioner. The clarification followed questions from the Obidient Movement after National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus represented the chairman during an engagement with an African Union delegation in Abuja. The movement had requested details of Amupitan’s location and the basis for the delegation of duties. INEC said Amupitan has been attending the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections in Ottawa, Canada. He also held meetings with technology and electoral partners on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and the security of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
