NSIB Flags Runway Hazards After Enugu Air Jet Overruns Benin Airport
All 68 people on board an Enugu Air flight from Lagos escaped unhurt after the aircraft overran Runway 05 at Oba Akenzua II Airport, Benin, on July 23. The Embraer jet, operating flight ENU4264, left the paved runway after landing and struck approach lights and abandoned concrete structures before stopping on bare ground. Passengers and crew evacuated through emergency slides. In its preliminary report, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau said abandoned localiser equipment at the runway end, poor visibility from the control tower and unavailable weather displays increased the risk. The bureau urged aviation authorities to remove the obstacles, improve the tower's line of sight and restore weather equipment. The investigation is continuing into runway conditions, weather reporting, the landing-gear collapse and crew procedures. The final report will determine the probable cause.
