Kenyan Mother Arrested After Stopping Daughter From Taking Exam Over ‘666’ Index Number

Police in Jomvu, Mombasa County, arrested a mother who allegedly locked her Grade 6 daughter indoors to stop her from taking the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment. The mother objected to the child’s examination index number because it contained “666”, which she described as satanic and forbidden by the Bible. Police intervened, rescued the pupil and detained the mother. Reports say the child’s father had also opposed her sitting the examination after a pastor’s prophecy. The incident has sparked debate over whether religious beliefs should prevent a child from accessing education.
