89-Year-Old Professor Mark Nwagwu Earns Second Ph.D.

Renowned scholar Professor Mark Nwagwu has added to his remarkable academic journey by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural and Media Studies from the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan at age 89. He enrolled in the programme at 86 and received the degree three years later. “Today my thesis came to life and history was made,” he wrote after convocation, where he celebrated the achievement alongside university leaders. A distinguished cell and molecular biologist, Nwagwu earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Zoology in the 1960s and his first Ph.D. from Stockholm University. He completed postdoctoral research in the United States and rose through the ranks at the University of Ibadan before retiring in 2002. Beyond his scientific career, he is a celebrated poet, essayist and memoirist. As a Fellow of both the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Association of Nigerian Authors, his latest feat underscores that the pursuit of knowledge knows no age limit.

It's impressive, but I wonder if the recent degree will significantly influence his legacy beyond symbolic achievement.

This is an exceptional feat, but few could realistically commit to rigorous postgraduate study in their late eighties.
