Court Orders UI to Reinstate Students Punished for Peaceful ‘No to Fee Hike’ Protest
Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has welcomed the Federal High Court’s decision quashing the suspension of three University of Ibadan students. They had peacefully displayed placards reading “No to Fee Hike” and “#FeesMustFall” during a student event. Justice N. E. Maha noted that Ayodele Aduwo, Mide Gbadegesin and Nice Linus were forcibly removed from the hall, assaulted by a mob and handed over to soldiers as alleged cultists. The university authorities did not contest these accounts, and the court ruled the disciplinary action unlawful. CAPPA says the ruling upholds constitutional rights to freedom of thought and expression. It has demanded that the university immediately reinstate the students and issue a full apology. The organisation also urged other campuses to respect peaceful dissent and foster critical thinking. The group praised the students for their courage and acknowledged the lawyers whose efforts secured this judgment. CAPPA pledged to continue supporting student activism against fee hikes and chronic underfunding in Nigerian higher education.
