Is Religion Shaped More by Birthplace and Upbringing Than Truth?

I believe religious identity is often shaped by where people are born and the faith of their parents. Someone born in India may grow up Hindu, while someone born in northern Nigeria may grow up Muslim and someone born in southern Nigeria may grow up Christian. That is why I question claims that people of other faiths are automatically destined for hell. To me, such claims can sound contradictory when every religion makes its own exclusive truth claims. I also believe some religious leaders use fear, prophecies and promises of miracles to influence followers and make money. In my view, religion should be questioned openly rather than accepted without critical thought. What do you think: is religion mainly a matter of upbringing, personal conviction or divine truth?
