Ukraine Reports Another Nigerian Mercenary Killed in Russian Service
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence says another Nigerian, Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, was killed fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kharkiv region. He died near Hrafske during recent clashes. Victor, 31, from Ilutitun in Ondo State, reportedly signed a mercenary contract in late February 2026, just days after Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry warned citizens against illegal recruitment into foreign conflicts. Ukrainian authorities allege recruiters promise quick pay but send recruits straight to the front. They claim social media ads lure African nationals, seize passports on arrival in Russia, and force them to fight under threat of debt, imprisonment, or deportation. The report cites about 215 Nigerians who have signed up with the Russian Ministry of Defence, with around 25 dead or missing. Kyiv urged Nigerians to reject these schemes and reminded the public that Nigeria is not a party to the Russia-Ukraine war.
