NUPRC Warns That Misinformation Could Undermine Nigeria’s Oil Investment

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has called on regulators, oil operators, investors and journalists to ensure petroleum-sector reports are accurate, verified and backed by technical evidence. Speaking at a Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigeria Council masterclass in Lagos, the Commission said misinformation can shape public opinion, affect investment decisions and even move energy markets before facts are confirmed. The NUPRC said transparent regulation, sound operations and credible communication are essential to sustaining investor confidence. It urged journalists to verify industry data, understand the assumptions behind projections and provide proper context in reports. The Commission cited its 2025 licensing round, which offered 50 oil blocks and drew 200 bids from 143 companies for 37 assets, as an example of a process that should be reported with clarity and technical accuracy.
