A 43-year-old woman in Georgia has sued Kaiser Permanente after a tissue-sample mix-up allegedly led to a false diagnosis of aggressive uterine cancer and the removal of her uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries. She underwent an endometrial biopsy in March 2025 after experiencing abnormal bleeding. Although a later CT scan reportedly showed no signs of cancer, she was advised to have surgery based on pathology results that were later found to be from another patient. Tests on the organs removed during surgery found no cancer. DNA testing in September reportedly confirmed that the original cancerous biopsy tissue did not belong to her. The error allegedly forced her into premature surgical menopause and caused months of fear for her and her family. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Kaiser Permanente has apologised and said it has taken steps to prevent a similar incident.

Exactly. Even when results look alarming, independent review and clear confirmation should come before any permanent procedure.

The alleged mix-up is especially devastating because the procedure described removed several organs, not just one.

For major treatment decisions, patients can ask whether pathology has been reviewed and what options exist for confirming the diagnosis.
