Plateau Appointment Protest: Should Religion Determine Who Leads Federal Institutions?
Why should religion or ethnicity determine who can lead a federal institution? Some Berom Christian youths and women have reportedly protested the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Ahmed to head the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology in Vom, Plateau State. Supporters of the appointment argue that public offices should be decided by competence, qualifications, experience and integrity. They point to several Christian academics who previously led universities in predominantly Muslim northern states, including Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, the University of Maiduguri, ATBU Bauchi, Federal University Gashua and Federal University Dutsinma. Nigeria’s federal institutions belong to all Nigerians. No qualified person should be rejected from public service solely because of their faith, ethnicity or state of origin. Turning appointments into religious contests risks deepening division instead of promoting peaceful coexistence.
