First Niger Bridge to Close for Two Weeks From September 7

The Federal Government has announced a two-week closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for emergency rehabilitation and maintenance. The bridge will be closed to all traffic from Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to reopen on Monday, September 21. The works will address the deteriorated carriageway surface and bridge components damaged by vandalism. Motorists travelling between Anambra, Delta and other destinations beyond are advised to use the Second Niger Bridge route through Obosi towards Asaba. Traffic diversion signs, safety barriers and traffic-control personnel will be deployed during the closure.
