Police Arrest, Repatriate Chinese Fugitive Wanted Over Rosewood Smuggling
The Nigeria Police Force says it has arrested and repatriated Zhang Shijie, a Chinese national wanted in China over alleged large-scale smuggling of endangered African rosewood. INTERPOL NCB Abuja arrested Zhang on 10 September 2026 in Ogere, Ogun State, after intelligence placed him in Nigeria. He was repatriated to Guangzhou on 16 September through cooperation between Nigerian and Chinese authorities. Chinese customs authorities allege that Zhang was involved in smuggling about 1,400 tonnes of African rosewood between November 2020 and January 2021. The consignment was valued at about 15.7 million yuan. Police said his Chinese passport had expired in November 2023.
