24 Killed as Bandits Storm Markets in Katsina State

24 Killed as Bandits Storm Markets in Katsina State — 1 of 6
1 / 6

Armed bandits attacked Jikamshi market in Musawa LGA on Monday evening, opening fire on traders as they closed for the day. Witnesses say seven people were killed on the spot and goods worth millions of naira were looted. A community leader confirmed that victims were buried according to Islamic rites and appealed for federal support to bolster state security efforts. In a separate raid over the weekend, gunmen struck Gwalgoro village in Kankia LGA, leaving up to 17 residents dead, according to local accounts. The state government, however, reported 11 fatalities after bandits launched a reprisal attack following a failed assault on nearby bridges. Security forces claim to have neutralised several attackers and recovered motorcycles and stolen cattle. Families of those killed—many of whom left behind multiple wives and large numbers of dependents—describe their future as uncertain. Grieving relatives and community members are calling on authorities to deploy more troops, establish mobile police camps and provide urgent relief to prevent a deeper humanitarian crisis.
