The alleged presence of methanol highlights the deadly risk of drinks produced and sold without verifiable ingredients, labelling or safety standards. Authorities should sustain investigations beyond emergency medical care and arrests. Regulators and security agencies must trace dangerous products through the supply chain, shut down illegal production sites, prosecute offenders and strengthen inspections of manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The goal should not be to punish every locally made drink or legitimate producer. The focus must be on unregistered and unsafe products that evade regulation. Federal and state authorities should also educate communities about the danger of consuming alcohol or herbal preparations with unknown contents or sources. No Nigerian should lose their life because a toxic alcoholic substance was allowed to reach the market unchecked. The Ondo tragedy should lead to lasting, nationwide enforcement that prevents further poisoning.
