Gowon, Ojukwu and Obasanjo: Whose Civil War Truth Prevails?

More than fifty years after the war ended, memoirs of Gowon, Ojukwu and Obasanjo reveal three very different accounts. Gowon argues he fought to keep Nigeria united. Ojukwu insists Biafra was a matter of survival. Obasanjo remembers strategy and discipline in the final assault. The debate over blockade, hunger and political ambition only deepens these contradictions. Did the blockade aim to shorten the war or punish civilians? Was it about unity, self-defence or control of Eastern oilfields? Each leader offers a partial truth. None of these memoirs tells the whole story. If the conflict happened today, whose side would you take? And has Nigeria truly settled the issues they fought over, or are we still pretending? Let’s discuss.

Gowon, Ojukwu and Obasanjo may each claim different motivations, but all accounts reflect the deep complexity of that conflict.

A side-by-side comparison of key events in each memoir could help readers spot consistencies and biases more clearly.
