Five EU States Plan First African Deportation Centre by 2027
Greece, Germany, Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands are discussing plans to establish deportation centres outside the European Union, with the first facility expected to operate in Africa by 2027. Danish Interior Minister Morten Bodskov said negotiations were progressing, while Germany’s Alexander Dobrindt said further work was needed to ensure any agreement could survive legal challenges. EU ministers are also considering tougher migration rules that would expand detention powers and permit so-called return hubs. Two Green lawmakers said Rwandan officials told them the country was in talks with the five EU states. The proposal has drawn criticism from rights advocates, who warn about possible human-rights implications for migrants sent to third countries.
